Snowpack
In recent days, snowdrift accumulations have formed in the Prealps and the Jura as a result of Bise winds, and on the Northern Alpine Ridge and the Main Alpine Ridge as a result of southerly winds. The accumulations are fairly small, but some are prone to triggering. Some have also been covered with new snow, making them difficult to recognise.
On the central part of the southern flank of the Alps and in southern Upper Engadine, the old snowpack structure has been partially transformed, especially in places with little snow, and fractures deeper in the snowpack are possible in isolated cases. In the other regions, the bottom and middle sections of the snowpack are generally favourable, meaning that avalanches usually only involve the upper layers.
Some medium-sized and occasionally large gliding avalanches are still possible, especially at altitudes between 2000 and 2500 m.

The night will be cloudy at first, becoming increasingly clear during the second half of the night. It will be mostly sunny during the day.

Temperatures will rise, reaching around -1 °C at midday at 2000 m.

There will be a moderate Bise wind in the Jura and the Prealps, otherwise mostly weak.

The night was partly cloudy. In the Jura and in the south, some snow fell to low altitudes. During the day, it was mostly cloudy in the west and south and quite sunny in the east.

From Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning, the following amounts of fresh snow were recorded:

At midday at 2000 m, between -4 °C in the north and -6 °C in the south
Wind
On the Northern Alpine Ridge and the Main Alpine Ridge, there were moderate southerly winds at times; otherwise winds were weak.
Trend until Saturday, 13.01.2024
It will be sunny in the mountains. The zero-degree level will rise to around 2000 m by Saturday. At high altitudes, light to moderate winds will blow from northerly directions.
The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. Some gliding avalanches, mostly of medium size, will still be possible.
