Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger, especially along the border with France. Moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming.

The more recent wind slabs can be released, especially by large additional loads, in particular on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2700 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in gullies and bowls and in the vicinity of peaks. In some places wind slabs are lying on an icy crust. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls. In particular on very steep sunny slopes individual mostly small moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day.

Snowpack Structure

Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise to gradual consolidation of the snowpack. Below approximately 2200 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. Above approximately 2500 m snow depths vary greatly at intermediate and high altitudes, depending on the infuence of the wind. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes at intermediate and high altitudes.
