Kernpunkte

New snow overnight and strong winds could create small slabs of wind blown snow in exposed areas.  These small wind slabs will most likely form below ridges, in gully features, and on open slopes.  Change plans if you see unstable snow or unexpected conditions.

    Small slabs of wind blown snow could exist in near and above treeline terrain today.  Look for blowing snow, new cornices, wind pillows, and snow surface scouring as clues to where any wind slabs may have formed.  Snow surface cracking in wind drifted areas could indicate unstable wind slab.  Adjust your plans or move around any areas of concern if you encounter unexpected or unwanted conditions.

    Limited new snow will be available for wind transport today possibly forming small wind slabs where the most new snow has fallen.  Most areas received a trace to 2 inches of new snow with variable snow surfaces continuing to exist with mostly "dust on crust" conditions.  Any wind slabs that form today are expected to be small in size and not extend very far downslope.  Although these wind slabs will be small, they could still have increased consequences in steep terrain or above terrain traps.

Variable snow surface conditions will continue with a variety of crusts, wind scoured surfaces, exposed rain crust, and areas of soft snow.  Shaded and wind protected northerly aspects above 7500' have the best chance of providing soft unconsolidated snow.  Melt freeze crusts on southerly aspects are expected to remain firm today with limited snow surface softening due to cold temperatures along with strong winds and variable cloud cover.  New snow could become wet on sun exposed slopes depending on the amount of cloud cover throughout the day.  

Deep open holes, open creeks, and ponded water exist in low lying areas, especially below 8,000'. Some of these hazards exist in isolated distribution at higher elevations.
