Rapidly accumulating snow and gale-force winds will cause the avalanche danger to increase quickly today. As the day progresses, widespread and dangerous avalanches will become very likely. Avalanches could happen at all elevations on exposed or sheltered terrain, even in spots people often consider safe. Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.

    Intense snowfall and gale-force winds blowing and drifting snow will create unstable and dangerous slabs of storm snow on many slopes today. Natural avalanches will become likely, and human-triggered avalanches will become very likely as new snow accumulates faster than it can bond to itself or the old snow surfaces. Avalanches large enough to bury or injure people could occur in both wind-loaded or wind-protected areas across all aspects. In areas where wind-blown snow has filled in the downwind side of ridges, gullies, and open slopes, larger and stiffer unstable slabs of locally deeper storm snow will exist. Large and fragile cornices will also lurk above many of these slopes. In areas sheltered from the wind, these storm slabs will be less deep and softer but still dangerous. Expect widespread avalanche activity as the storm intensifies today. 

Avalanche Discussion

Today's travel advice is simple: avoid traveling in, near, or below avalanche terrain. If you intend to go into the backcountry today, do so with extra caution and extra safety margins. Pay very close attention to the terrain you choose to travel in. Stick to low-angle, non-avalanche terrain without steeper slopes above or to the side. Use maps and observations to ensure you are not in or even close to the runout zones of any potential avalanche paths. Poor visibility will make it harder to know where you are and what is above you. Remember that you don’t have to be on a steep slope to be caught in an avalanche that starts from above you. Small terrain features that may seem benign, such as road cuts or creekbeds, could also be dangerous today. Conditions will change quickly and could become significantly more dangerous in a short period of time. Maintaining awareness and monitoring these changes presents a huge challenge that poor visibility and extreme weather conditions will only exacerbate.
