Kernpunkte

Increased S/SW wind last night will begin to form cohesive slabs in the upper elevations. Where these wind slabs form will increase the possibility of triggering larger avalanches on buried weak layers near the ground. Steer clear of wind loaded terrain and look for obvious signs of these firm slabs in terrain exposed to the wind by identifying large drifts, pillow, and cracking surfaces.

    A cohesive slab 1-2 feet deep sits above various buried weak layers where triggering an avalanche is possible. These slabs will be most reactive where fresh wind slabs form and on the south half of the compass where slabs above the buried weak layers are harder. Areas where snow is transported by the wind will stress these buried weak layers. Slab depths will be 2 feet with possibly higher amounts near 3 feet in terrain exposed to the wind near 10,000’. Avoid steep slopes leading to terrain traps such as creeks and gullies even in sheltered areas. The recent avalanche on Barbers Points is a good example of terrain to avoid where this problem exists (steep slopes along ridgelines).

    Last night S/SW winds increased to 20-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. This uptick in wind will continue today transporting low density snow and creating firm, cohesive slabs. Slab depths will be less than 12 inches. You’ll find these wind slabs in the upper elevations on open and exposed slopes on leeward terrain (N-NE-E). The most reactive slabs will be above 9700’ on terrain bordering the Teton wilderness as well as ridgelines such as Two Oceans and Leidy. Look for obvious signs of instability such as large drifts, pillows and cracking.

Wind slabs + buried weak layers =  highest possibility of triggering a large avalanche

While riding today, the areas of most concern for avalanches will be where the wind is blowing and transporting snow. These areas will be where the two avalanche problems converge creating a dangerous equation. 6-9 inches of low density recent snow formed fresh slabs last night continuing today that sit above a thin melt freeze crust (poor interface). Another 2-3 inches is possible today. Triggering one of these wind slabs has the potential to step down to deeper weak layers. This persistent slab problem that will get you in trouble. Analyze terrain wisely to identify where triggering an avalanche will have serious consequences such as rocky slopes. Seek out slopes where recent snow hasn’t set up into a firm slab devoid of terrain traps.
