Triggering avalanches will be possible in wind drifted snow near treeline and above treeline. Getting pushed into traps like long sustained steep slopes, rocks, trees, and narrow constrictions can increase the consequence of getting caught in an avalanche. Look for signs of unstable snow such as cracking and recent avalanches and remember you can reduce your exposure to avalanches by moving to slopes less than 30 degrees steep.

    Use your evaluation skills to monitor how deep slabs are. As slabs become deeper, avalanches can become larger. Some terrain features will accumulate more snow than others. Keep an open mind and recognize changes as you move through terrain. I expect wind slabs to build throughout the day as more snow comes in and the wind moves it. 

    New wind slabs will be building on a variety of old snow surfaces. The previously exposed crusts will provide a smooth running surface for avalanches. Surface hoar (feathery crystals; see picture below) have been found in a few places near treeline; wind slabs building over surface hoar will have the ability to propagate wider and run farther than normal. 

    The distribution reflects shifting in the wind direction. While I expect to find wind slabs mostly on north and east facing terrain, keep a close watch on where wind deposits are ending up.

    Keep an eye on blowing snow and wind slab development in areas of dead forests and clearings in areas you typically think of as below treeline.

Avalanche Discussion

I do not expect enough snow to fall to bring on a storm slab problem but if the storm miraculously overproduces and we get 8' or more new snow, storm slab avalanches could be a reality.

Observers have been finding surface hoar in wind/sun protected areas over the last few days prior to the incoming snow.  Buried surface hoar can create a sensitive weak layer in the snowpack and can lead to avalanches breaking wider and running farther than usual. 

Small cornices may build at ridgetops. Be cautious when approaching ridges especially in low visibility situations. Avoid breaking through a cornice and falling down the slope below.
