Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs represent the main danger. Extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger is required.

Artificially triggered avalanches and stability tests confirm danger level 3 (considerable) at elevated altitudes. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular at the base of rock walls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Avalanches can be released by a single winter sport participant. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The wind slabs remain for the foreseeable future prone to triggering. The snowpack consists of faceted crystals. Faceted weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
