The Shape of Avalanche Forecasting

Avalanches are a human problem, and the only way to lower your chances of being involved in one is to change the behaviour of how you approach the backcountry. Reading the local avalanche forecast and thinking you're safe isn't enough.

Avalanche Forecasts

Professional avalanche forecasts are an amazing resource for all backcountry enthusiasts, but they are only one piece in the puzzle for people wanting to find out the latest beta on an area. Usually released daily, these professional insights form a solid basis for decision making.

Trip Reports

Far from being just about bragging rights, trip reports are a great way to sum up how your day was. Not only giving others beta on current conditions, it helps you debrief on what went well, and what didn't.

Observations

Here comes the science bit. Whilst comments and trip reports give an abstract view, digging a pit and really observing the snow can reveal a wealth of information.

Comments

Just a simple comment about your day, however small, contributes to the collective knowledge. Question things you see and hear. Just say it - we're in the trust tree, in the nest!

Trends

Looking backwards is only half the battle in figuring out how snow is going to react when you ski it. Looking for patterns in upcoming conditions is essential to making smart decisions.

Avalanche forecasting is everybody's job.
